Gibson Serial Number Lookup: Every Format Decoded by Era
Gibson serial numbers are famously confusing because the company changed systems several times and, in the 1960s, reused the same ranges across different years. Since 1977, though, the serial actually encodes the exact build date. Here is how each era works, including the format changes in 2005, 2014 and 2019 that many charts online still get wrong.

1977–2005: The 8-Digit YDDDYRRR Format
This is the format on most Les Pauls, SGs and ES models you will meet from this period, and it is the one people most often misread. The year is not the first two digits. It is split across the 1st and 5th digits:

built October 3, 1985, instrument 501. Rankings 001–499 marked Kalamazoo
production and 500–999 marked Nashville until the Kalamazoo plant closed in 1984.
July 2005–2014: The 9-Digit Batch Format (YDDDYBRRR)
In mid 2005 Gibson inserted a batch digit in position 6, growing the serial to nine digits. The year is still split across the 1st and 5th digits, and digits 2–4 are still the day of the year.

2014–Mid 2019: The Model-Year Format (YYRRRRRRR)
For roughly five years Gibson simplified things: the first two digits are the model year (14 through 19) and the remaining seven digits are a plain sequential number. Note that model years launched in the fall of the prior calendar year, so a serial starting 16 can sit on a guitar shipped in late 2015.
Mid 2019–Present: Back to YDDDYBRRR
From mid 2019 Gibson returned to the 9-digit date-encoded format. A current serial
starting 2 294 0... reads year 20, day 294: built October 20, 2020.

I will be straight with you: no lookup tool can date a 1960s Gibson from the serial alone, including mine. For those instruments the serial narrows the window, and potentiometer codes, logo style and hardware do the rest.
